More News - Discord, Steam, New Footage

Hello, I'm back again with some more news and updates on the new premium version of First Cut, currently in development.

First of all I made an official Discord: https://discord.gg/nkA8XhJXVt

I put it together so fans have a place to discuss the game, and I have a place to aggregate all the current information in one place. I've made an FAQ about the new game, and I'll update it with more info if there is anything I missed. I don't have much experience with Discord so please follow the rules and let's hope it doesn't turn into a hot mess.

I'm also currently in the process of launching a Steam page which should hopefully raise the game's profile a little before release.

As previously, I don't yet have a firm release date in mind, although there's a chance it may be pushed back into early next year. There's still plenty to be done and I don't want to release until I'm satisfied with the level of polish and the content available.

As for new footage:

The bandits clash swords, killing one of their own, and somehow I escape out the other end.

I've been working on the 'scenario mode': long, scrolling levels populated with groups of enemies and ambushes. As mentioned before the AI has been tweaked in groups to make things reasonably fair - enemies will stand their ground and only hit you from behind if you back into them. If you're surrounded combat becomes a tug-of-war where footwork is key and dodging will help you reposition yourself.
They can also be baited into hitting their friends. It's chaotic, but crucially, it's also fun and adds a new layer of tactical decision-making to combat.

Scrolling levels also meant creating a whole new layered background system to give depth to the landscape, and since the player now needs to cover more ground, your speed will increase after a few uninterrupted forward steps.

In addition, I did another pass on the customization options. There is now an oni mask, a samurai helmet, a headband, a cloth mask, a moustache, wrist-guards, gloves, and some split-hakama (ie: baggy riding pants).

As always, thanks for reading and stay-tuned for more news.

This looks brilliant so far. I just discovered the original edition today and fell in love with it. Are you by any chance considering publishing the new one in some 'early access' fashion? I'd be more than glad to spend some coin on it.

By the way, i came up with an idea while playing the original - the "sidestep" dodge looked really obscure, like if the character just stood in place and the blade swooped right through him. If you intend to still use this mechanic in the new edition, maybe you could use some layer-depth shenanigans to better visualize the sidestep? For example, make the player a tiny bit smaller and the enemies a tiny bit bigger to make the illusion of distance between them?

Anyway, good luck with the project! I really enjoy your work.

Thanks!

I intend to publish the game when it's finished, either later this year, or more likely, early next year.

I already did some work to improve the sidestep in the new version - a forward sidestep now has its own animation, the character will move a little each time a blade passes over, and I've been experimenting with a soft gradient drawn over the sprite to add depth.

I beg you to make this available on Mac if possible, played it on my friends computer couple months ago and been hoping it will become available for me. Love the game, good luck!
