This game is actually so sick. Would love to see a weather/t.o.d filter for the maps at some point. Good Job!

(+1)(-1)

On serious note i think it would be great if you add a turbo mode where the entire game is much faster paced. A restart button would also help since its slow to restart after you die

gOOD GAME@2!!!

(+3)

Thanks for making such an awesome game

(+3)

Hey Drasnus, hope you are well.
Firstly I wanted to congratulate you on first cut. I find it maginificent. I have messaged you on artstation as I had a business enquiry for you!

Could also share a discord/telegram or other address if preferable!

Kindly
Ryko

(+1)

Hi, I sent you a message on artstation.

my game if running really slow but that fix isint working, anyone know another fix?

I opened the first cut file, opened the options note, and changed AlternateSyncMethod from 0 to 1

I think it would be great if they add an online mode to this great game

Does anyone have any title suggestions for the launch of the game? "First Cut" is too hard to get to #1 on search engines.

Tsujigiri

maybe, but I still love the name Fist Cut

The Last Samurai ?

There's a movie by that name, so it can't be done without risking to get sued.

I'm inclined to say "stabbity death" not because it's a good idea but because I say that too often in swordfigthing (both irl and in games).

I swear I've seen my blood get splattered on the walls like six times. 10/10 game bruu. 🙌🙌🙌

An amazing game, the game really shines with the feeling of thrill it creates. The only place it lacks in is the fact that it has no in-game tutorial. The "Foolish" and "Easy" difficulties are too forgiving and allow the player to win by just randomly mashing the controls, on the other hand, the other difficulties require you to have an understanding of the game mechanics which is hard to obtain. All in all, still a very good game, literally cannot stop playing

(+1)

Thanks, moving forward I plan to add a tutorial.

it wont let me play it keep saying this:

Hi, a shader crash is usually related to your DirectX installation. Check the troubleshooting section above for a link to a common fix.

(1 edit)

Also try installing visual C++ 2012 x86 and x64 (as mentioned in troubleshooting).

Awesome game. Love the visuals.

I was looking for a Bushido Blade spiritual successor for such a long time and your game scratches that itch just perfectly!! Congratulations! =)

(+1)

i think this is a bug but i cant change the control scheme to make it

 controller versio

(+1)

Generally, all you need to do is press start on the controller when you open the game instead of enter, if I recall correctly.

1. Make sure controller is plugged in before starting game.

2. Press controller buttons on the opening screen.

The one time I tried it, plugging my controller in after the game opened (but before doing anything) it didn't work. I've seen the same from a lot of games in the past so I usually make sure to plug the controller in before starting a game up anyway.

What an underrated game. I would gladly buy the full-fledged version on Steam or any sequel if it happens. My only complaint is dodging mechanics. It needs some improvements. (Like you need to get really close to the enemy to dodge without getting killed). That's it.

This game has the best dueling system and the AI imho. It creates a thrilling emotion I've never felt before in any other fighting game, ever. To summarize, one hit means death but fighting with AI is so fair. Everytime I died, I blamed myself and literally said "Oh, how could I make that mistake. Rematch!". Btw, AI's moves vary a lot. Opponents don't simply rush to attack you. (Sometimes they even try to get you to the corner too.)

****MESSAGE TO THE DEV****

I would like to give you some suggestions and tips if you plan to develop a sequel;

-More character customization options,
-New weapon types,
-New nature and city scenery, (If you can create backgrounds like those in old The King of Fighters game that would be simply amazing. I see that you are very talented in creating pixel art and already capable of creating something like those.)
-Modding support and encouraging modding is crucial for these type of small indie games imo. (This way players can add more content and keep the game alive.)
-Please keep the core gameplay mechanics and don't create anything complex. Three attacking directions are good and enough. No combos is what makes this game fun too,
-Finisher moves,
-New blood effects and new weapon sounds,
-Ambiance sounds, (city sounds, birds, waterfall etc.)
-Character sounds, (when attacking or blocking)
-Taunts! Fits perfectly for this game,
-You don't even have to create music. This game would be much exciting and thrilling with only ambiance sounds,
-Sword cleaning animation after the duel would be so cool too.

Lastly, In my opinion fighting genre lacks new and fresh creations. Your next game would shine with right developing and content. You have the chance to create an exciting game like the ones created back in the golden days of fighting games. I don't know much about marketing but a game that has the features I listed above with these aesthetics would definitely catch people's attention. I can give you so much more suggestions and tips but It's up to you to make this game happen at this point.

So yeah, thanks for reading. Please consider making a sequel.

(1 edit) (+3)

Hi, thanks for all the detailed feedback. Moving forward with the game we're basically on the same page, most of your ideas sound right in line with my own thoughts. I love KOF / SNK stuff too so I'm definitely aspiring to have some really nice backgrounds and atmosphere. I always appreciate being compared to the masters. :)

-Sword cleaning animation after the duel would be so cool too

One thing I really like is that when you attack after winning and don't hit the opponent's body, the blood from your sword gets thrown off the blade. It really reinforces the "would be cool to be able to do that then sheathe the blade" idea!

(+2)

I uploaded a video :)

One thing I will say, is that when they draw their swords, the edge should be pointing up. That's how katanas were, and are carried. Just a little thing I noticed, not a big deal.

(+1)

I really love the way you edited this, thanks for your support.

Thank you, thank you for the great game :)

(+1)

This could be explained away by saying the game is set somewhere from the 10th to the 13th century. The earlier stages predate the invention of the katana and even through the late 13th century, the tachi was more common. That's important because those were usually worn up the other way.

Also that video is amazing, great work!

(+1)

That's true, I hadn't considered that. A katana is worn edge up, in the belt, and a tachi is worn edge down, with a harness.

And thank you! I had fun making it

In which Engine or Language did you made this game?

I can't remember the answer, but you will find it in an older comment.

Hi, it's Game Maker Studio 1 (GML).

(+2)

wow! This is great! I tried making a game like this once, but the execution here is brilliant. Well done! yes, the menu could use some work, but who cares when the game itself is fantastic? Bravo!

Thanks!

(+4)

I literally made an account because I need to gush about this game in a paragraph.

The gameplay is visceral and intense, while also being simple, making it easy to get the hang of, while also extremely satisfying. I've been playing it all day. It does an amazing job of making it feel like you're really clashing swords. The sound is great, the graphics are pleasant, the arenas are cool, and the gameplay makes me squee. Of course it could use some polishing here and there, but I'm still completely satisfied with how it is released now.

Mr. Developer Sir, I really hope you continue to develop this game; it'd make my lifetime. This really is the ultimate fighting game for me. Despite being so simple, it gives me the same rush as Sekiro.

Thanks, that's really nice (I loved Sekiro). I'll hopefully start expanding it soon.

could you make this for browsers or mobile maybe

Made a video on this game -

(literally cannot stop playing it, its so fun)

Thanks for playing :)

(+1)

Great game, better than nidhogg.

Thanks!

(+2)

This game is better than Ghost of Tsushima... don't @ me tho😂

Great video, I always love seeing friends playing together.

(+2)

Hey, Drasnus, hope you remember me! I came across a huge bag of cash and I was wondering if you would be interested in getting funded to finish a game in exchange for a small percentage of the sales. I don't necessarily expert to turn a profit, I'm more interested in helping you release a game.

(+2)

Hey man, that's an outrageously generous offer and I really appreciate all your support for my work. I'm a little busy right now with a freelance art commitment but I'd like to think it over carefully and discuss it further with you soon. Is there a place I can message you?

(+2)

Can you set up a temporary e-mail address so we can exchange Skype or Telegram without leaving our contact info on the internet? I could do it too, but people are more likely to want to scam the funder than the funded (I'm probably just paranoid, but better safe than sorry :)) ).

I'm just upvoting these comments because I want to see this game get more attention. Also please, if the game does get funded and released "properly" DON'T go exclusively with Steam. It's been a literal health hazard for many users since 2019, and in spite of knowing the problem for that long, Valve has not merely refused to fix it, but blocked the use of the only safe workaround some people had.

I'm more likely to support Epic exclusivity than a game released only on Steam at this stage, and I'm not alone in doing so. Make sure the game remains available - as the final product - on here, or release on GOG or the Microsoft store as well. Steam is the biggest gaming platform, but they're making some MASSIVE mistakes recently and pushing consumers elsewhere.

(1 edit) (+1)

Hey, thanks for your support as always. Grindologist and I have been talking and things are looking optimistic for the game. It'll still be a while before the game has been polished and packaged, but when it does I'll be sure to make it available anywhere I can - including on Itch and hopefully GOG.

(+1)

That's great news and good luck!

Im still waiting for that Mac build so I can play the game for myself, Im really eager to play it

(1 edit) (+1)

Really good game. Please contiune i wait the full game :D

will this ever be a full game, do u guys now any games like it

this is one of the best  games a come by in a long time

The closest comparisons are either nowhere near close to the depth and complexity of First Cut, or don't have the one-hit-kill mechanic.

...unless you count the card game I made, which isn't realtime (obviously, because card game).

(+1)

Thanks, I'll hopefully be expanding the game soon.

I've often heard it compared to Bushido Blade for ps1, or Barbarian from 1987, although I've only seen those games in videos.

(1 edit)

Hey this game feels like it has different tick rates for different people.
Which kinda sucks for speedrunning.
we have tried combability sleep margin and other thing before you say that.

(1 edit) (+1)

Hi, I'm not sure what else to suggest but you could try opening the options file and changing:

'VertexBufferMethod=1' to 'VertexBufferMethod=2', or trying the 'AlternateSyncMethod'.

I've also heard mouse/controller drivers can cause problems like this so I'd suggest seeing if unplugging / changing ports has any effect.

Finally I'd suggest googling the same problem for games like Nuclear Throne and Undertale because they use the same engine and those games are much better documented than mine.

(+1)

Wow, I was really impressed by the cohesive art style and the use of the particle effects. The fighting was visually convincing. Loved it.

Hi, thanks for all the kind words and the rating. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

foda

I tried everything to run this game but it didn't run always shown this error

FATAL ERROR in Vertex Shader compilation

D3DXCompile failed - result

I updated direct and also downloaded c++

2012 x86 or 64 but nothing happened and same error put up again and again please

Help

(1 edit)

Hi, "D3DXCompile" is a DirectX error. It seems that your installation of DirectX is still causing you problems. I'd suggest re-installing.

Hello, I am from the moderation team of the speedruning community on speedrun.com . We had issues recently because some runners submited runs with game that look faster than normal. We first thought they were cheating but we are wondering if there is things that can influence the game speed.
(Ps: Your game is really fun and satisfaying to play. I hope you keep adding content)

Hi, the game should be running at a stable 60fps. There are some technical issues that can cause slowdown, check the troubleshooting section and also Xachler's post below.

Addicting

hey, idk if u could fix the lag, i have done the sleep margin thing and checked the visuals c++, but it still goes a lot slower than how its supposed to go, sorry for the inconvenience, also great game.

Hi, I heard recently that this can happen with Nvidia cards if you have G-sync turned on.

thanks for replying, i don't have G-sync on, in fact my monitor doesn't even support it, i will still play the game because it's really fun, the lag actually messes the counter attack and other aspects but overall i really like this game, i will wait for an update or something, really love ur game

That's too bad. It could be that an anti-virus or something is scanning it in realtime and slowing it down. I created this game in the same engine as Nuclear Throne, Undertale/Delta-Rune and Hotline Miami 1 and I understand that the same problem occasionally affects those games too. Searching for solutions to the same problem in those games might help anyone still struggling.

(+3)

well, trying i just changed the compatibility to windows XP pack 3 and it now works perfectly, now i can enjoy the game to its fullest. thank you for trying to help me.

Vs Oni gamemode (don't need to acctually add breathings too)
